I recently ran across the phrase "Beaux Yeax" in the cemetery this
weekend. Can someone please translate this for me? I know it's a
nickname or similar, but wondered what it means... I like the sound of
it...

Thanks much!

I'm still trying to figure out how I'm reading this post, seeing as I
don't, and never have, subscribed to alt.culture.cajun newsgroup.

I really don't think it can be translsated into anything.Beaux-means
Pretty,or Handsome.Yeaux-could mean many things. It could mean Pretty
Boy.Also Hansome Man.It could be just a nick name and has no
meaning.I've heard that before myself. Many Cajuns used a lot of
slang,so its hard to tell what each person means ,unless you know the
person or the people of a certain area which the slang is used.In our
area we used to say Beaux Pet-for a man who thought he was very
handsome ,but was really a puff of hot air.Mr. Barry Anclet may know
more.He teaches French at UL of Lafayette.

I think it must be Beaux Yeux, meaning Nice Eyes.
("Yeux" is the not-that-obvious plural of "œil".)

The spelling "yeax" is archaic in Europe (Langue d'Oïl dialect, found
for example in the 17th century version of the book of Psalms musically
arranged by Dutch composer J.P. Sweelinck) and seems to have been kept
in Manitoba (like in the folk song "Tes yeax bleaus", "Your blue eyes")
and, apparently, in Louisiana.

I'd have spelled it les yeaux (yo - but what do I know?). It's a
variant pronunciation of les yeux. I'm not sure where I've heard it
spoken that way (but, I'm certain I've heard it)... maybe somewhere
around Lake Charles? I believe it was Lawrence Walker who had a tune
called "Les 'Tits Yeaux Noirs", or something similar. Right off the top
of my head, I don't recall where he was from.

Then of course, there's always yippie ty yi yeaux :)
