KEMAH The Coast Guard called off its search Tuesday for a member of the
crew of a tugboat that overturned near the Houston Ship Channel.
The search was called off at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday.
The move means that the crewman, Carlton Guidry, 38, is likely dead, said
Petty Officer 3rd Class Andrew Kendrick.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Guidry, Lt. Cmdr.
Kristi Luttrell, Coast Guard Group Galveston operations officer, said in a
prepared statement. We always regret when we cannot bring someone home to
their loved ones.
At 3 p.m. Monday, the oyster boat Franco reported to the Coast Guard that
the 58-foot tugboat David C. Devall had capsized between Kemah and Redfish
Island.
Crewman on board the oyster boat rescued two people from the water, but
could not find Guidry.
The other two crewmen, Cliff Felton and Wayne Hunt, were taken to the
University of Texas Medical Branch.
The search was called off after more than 25 hours.
A three-mile section of the Houston Ship Channel was closed at 4:09 p.m.
Monday from light 50 to light 60, between Kemah and Redfish Island.
The ship channel was reopened at 5 p.m. Tuesday for inland barge traffic
only.
The Coast Guard reported that the closure disrupted traffic to the upper
ship channel. According to information provided by the Coast Guard, 58
ships were affected. More than 39 barges were waiting in Bayport, Pelican
Cut and Port Bolivar, the Coast Guard reported.
In a prepared statement, the Coast Guard said crews performed 10 flyovers
with a helicopter from Air Station Houston and maintained a continuous
search with rescue boat crews from Station Galveston.
