!943 I was stationed Gulfport Miss. Weekends.. rode train Azalean from
Boloxi to NO.. Went out the crony of the station. wide street. 200 300
feet large restaurant on right. Doors always wide open At the end of the
block got on street car going to the right. Rode that car to the end of
the line. There someone would meet me and we would walk a mile along a
road. Trees all around. Land had little grass. The family had a house
built on stilts. When you sat on the steps those big old water roaches
would run across the ground;.. There was water 500 feet or so from the
house. I do not know if we went north of south... I assume south. Just
generally where was I . I believe that I went through the French
quarters of NO. Thank you Grant

The Azalean ran on the L&N (Louisville & Nashville) RR. In the old days, each railroad ran into New Orleans to it's own train station. At one time there were about a dozen train stations in NO. The L&N station was located near the Customs House at the river end of Canal. Which way he went depends where the front door of the station was. There was a streetcar line following the river (Jackson St.?). ANd if he "went right" he would have passed in front of Jackson Square and gone on around to Poland Avenue. THis is based on an old NO street maps online. He said he went to the "end of the line" but this streetcar ran in a circuit and didn have an end but poland avenue was where the streetcar dog-legged at a right angle after travelling a long distance in a straight line so he might have felt this was the end. I think this is in the Bywater area of NO. On a current map, I see a square-shaped lake with an old causeway going over it but Google maps does not name it. Could this be the water he was referring to?

Other theory. If the front of the station faced Canal and he "went right" then he went up (down? I don't have the NO terms down pat, sorry) Canal. Canal streetcar went to the fairgrounds (according to 1908 map) and made a tight circle and came back. Lake Ponchartrain is more than a mile from there, though BUT the neighborhood along the lake is the only one so far that I can find a mention of stilt houses in NO although I predict they will be gaining in popularity in the future.
